This is what your project should look like after the previous step.  What is important here is that you have created a loop over the edge of your project that, in this case, comes from the back, over the edge, into a hole on the front, and out the back.

 

Also notice that we were careful to create this loop OEVER the end piece from the very beginning.  You can see that piece sticking out to the right in the image.  The working end, rest of the lace, is going out the top left of the image.
